COUNTERING CREATIONISM

Humani is concerned about attacks on science education, including attempts by creationists to include it on the school curriculum and in museums and sites of historic interest, such as the Giant's Causeway. You can help by becoming a member and also joining the British Centre for Science Education at:

INTEGRATED EDUCATION

94% of Northern Ireland children are educated in religiously segregated schools. This is tantamount to child abuse. Humani believes that children should be taught together in a loving, friendly and tolerant atmosphere. We fully support the movement for integrated education. The Northern Ireland Council for Integrated Education can be found at: http://www.nicie.org/     See also the Integrated Education Fund at: http://www.ief.org.uk/

NEW POLITICS

Humani believes that it is time for a new, more cosmopolitan, type of politics for Northern Ireland, which looks beyond Orange and Green to a third discourse focused on the common good. Platform for Change seeks to do just that. It can be found at: http://www.platformforchange.net/

RIGHTS OF GAY, LESBIAN, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDERED PEOPLE

Humani supports equality for minorities, including gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people. Every year, several members take part in the Belfast Pride Parade (2011, below), which is the climax of the Belfast Pride Festival held annually in the summer (this year on Saturday 4th August, 2012). The Parades Commission has stated that "Belfast Pride is a welcome addition to the city and it is a colourful and positive celebration of all lifestyles which co-exist in Belfast". You can read more about the festival at: http://www.belfastpride.com/

COHESION, SHARING AND INTEGRATION

Humani has made a submission to the recent NI Executive's Consultation on CSI. While supporting the principles set out in the document, HUMANI was critical of the assumption that there were basically only "two communities" between which resources and cultural life must be divided. We called for ambitious targets to remove segragation from education and a Charter for a Secular Society which would remove church privilege from the public sphere. You can read the response here (click pdf logo). Humani response to CSI

A key aim of Humani is to provide a voice for those who do not belong to the "two communities" and ensure we are not drowned out by their spokespeople. Brian McClinton's book The Third Way published by Humani over ten years ago set out our position clearly but it needs to be re-stated.

LIFERING SECULAR RECOVERY

Lifering is a new recovery group for people with substance abuse issues. Meetings are held at 8pm on Tuesday evenings at the Quaker Meeting House, Frederick Street, Belfast. People are encouraged to build a treatment plan which suits them individually.  Meetings are open to people with substance abuse issues (including prescription drugs) and their families. It is hoped that meetings will soon start in some of the local treatment centres. The meetings will be added on the main Ireland website www.liferingireland.org.  The main website is www.lifering.orgLifering is an extra choice in the ongoing struggle against drug (including prescription drugs) and alcohol addiction.

ABORTION RIGHTS

Humani has always supported the rights of women to choose to have an abortion. Click here to read Brian McClinton's article in the journal. Post your views on the Humanist Network or on William Crawley's Blog and don't forget to mention this site. The Family Planning Association exists to advise on the sexual and reproductive rights and choices of all people in Northern Ireland - putting sexual health on the agenda.
